The village of Paleos Panteleimonas

Paleos Panteleimonas Village: A Picturesque Gem Restored to Glory

The charming village of Paleos Panteleimonas underwent a remarkable reconstruction in 1987 as part of the restoration initiative for Greece’s five “preservable traditional settlements.” It was chosen for its unique architecture and overall aesthetic value of the buildings.
Perched at an altitude of 700 meters on the slopes of Lower Olympus (Pieria region), Paleos Panteleimonas treats its visitors to breathtaking views of the Thermaic Gulf, the coastline, and the Venetian fortress of Platamonas.
The village’s history, by Greek standards, is relatively short. Presumably founded in the 14th century, archaeological excavations provide evidence of its early existence. Until 1700, the village was nearly abandoned, as inhabitants preferred coastal settlements. However, following a cholera outbreak, the population moved to higher grounds in the mountains, marking the beginning of active settlement in Panteleimonas, named after the saint. A small church dedicated to him was swiftly erected. The town quickly developed into a major supplier of agricultural products, engaging in wood processing and animal husbandry.

After World War II, during the years of severe economic crisis, many locals migrated to America, Australia, and European countries. In 1959, the few remaining residents appealed to the government, highlighting soil erosion and the gradual deterioration of homes. The state responded by allocating new plots for construction lower down the slopes of Olympus. In 1964, the construction of New Panteleimonas commenced.
For 30 years, the village was abandoned and gradually deteriorated. Only in the 1980s did local families gradually begin to restore mansions in the distinctive Macedonian style. The central square, school, and winding streets were gradually reconstructed using stone.
Today, Paleos Panteleimonas stands as the region’s postcard, attracting tourists from all over Greece and gaining recognition beyond the country’s borders. Its distinctive architecture, stunning views, numerous taverns offering traditional cuisine, and souvenir shops have transformed it into a popular tourist destination.
