EXCURTION DESCRIPTION
Forty Saints
Saranda is one of the small quiet towns in Albania, located on the shores of the Ionian Sea. This is a very important port for the country, which looks directly at the island of Corfu, which is located directly opposite. The city is also called the “Southern Gate of Albania”.
The history of the inhabitants of these places dates back to the Stone Age – the Konispol caves with the ruins of ancient settlements and other monuments of this era are known all over the world, located near this city. Here, as well as in other lands of Epirus, in the 3-2 millennia BC. the first Greek tribes came. Later, Mycenaean settlements were built – many objects from this period were discovered during excavations.
Vourthoto
Vouthroto is one of the most famous and well-preserved archeological parks in Albania. In 1992 the ruins of the ancient city were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, while the nearby Venetian fortress was included in the entire monument. The archeological site is located next to a lake near the town of Agioi Saranda on the shores of the Ionian Sea.
Polis was founded as a joint colony of Corinth and Corfu. The strange thing was that Corfu itself was at that time already a former colony of Corinth, and this led to a series of conflicts with the latter over control of the city.
